What is chalk?

Climbing chalk – also known as magnesia or magnesium – is an essential part of bouldering and climbing. It reduces moisture on the skin and provides a better grip on holds. Chunky chalk, in particular, offers an optimal combination of instant grip and even distribution thanks to its texture.

Why MANTLE Chalk?

Chalk may look simple at first glance, but consistency, particle size, and how it feels on the skin make a real difference.

Our loose MANTLE Chalk is deliberately made from a blend of fine powder and soft chalk chunks. The powder spreads quickly on the skin, while you can crush the larger pieces between your fingers directly in the chalk bag.

We have spent years refining this exact consistency alongside ambitious climbers and athletes, using it in gyms, on rock, and in competitions.

The result is not a complicated specialty product, but exactly what good chalk should be: simple, reliable, and pleasant to use.

Loose climbing chalk for bouldering, sport climbing & training

Good chalk doesn't have to be complicated. The most important thing is that it spreads comfortably on your hands and you can use exactly the amount you need at the time.

Our loose MANTLE chalk consists of 100% magnesium carbonateand combines fine chalk powder with chalk chunks of different sizes. The fine powder spreads quickly on fingers and palms, while you can crush the larger pieces directly in the chalk bag to your liking. This mixture of powder and chunks is already a key feature of the existing MANTLE chalk.

Whether bouldering, on a long lead route, or training: Loose chalk can be easily topped up and is suitable for both artificial holds in the gym as well as for use on rock.

Thanks to the different fill sizes, you can also choose exactly the variant that suits your needs – from the small sample pack to a supply for frequent climbers, clubs, or climbing gyms. The existing product page lists 25 g, 200 g, 450 g, 1 kg, and 15 kg.

Chunky, but not just chunky

Our loose chalk consists of a balanced mixture of fine powder and chalk chunks of various sizes.

This lets you decide how to use it: Fine chalk spreads quickly over your hands, while larger chunks can be crushed as needed and rubbed directly between your fingers.

How do I use loose chalk correctly?

Put a small amount of chalk in your chalk bag or boulder bag. Rub your hands lightly on the chalk or the chalk chunks inside and spread a thin layer over your fingers and palms.

More chalk does not automatically mean more grip. As a rule, an even thin layer is completely sufficient.

When rope climbing, you can re-chalk in the chalk bag during the route. When bouldering, the chalk usually stays in the larger boulder bag on the ground.

Still have questions?

What is loose climbing chalk?

Loose climbing chalk consists mainly of magnesium carbonate and is poured directly into a chalk bag or boulder bag. It helps reduce moisture on the hands and ensures a more consistent grip when climbing and bouldering.

Is MANTLE Chalk rather fine or chunky?

MANTLE Loose Chalk combines fine powder with soft chalk chunks. This allows it to be spread quickly over the hands, while larger pieces can be crushed between the fingers when needed.

For which disciplines is loose chalk suitable?

Loose chalk is suitable for bouldering, lead climbing, sport climbing, indoor training, and outdoor climbing. It is especially practical anywhere you want to re-chalk regularly.

Is loose chalk also suitable for beginners?

Yes. Loose chalk is easy to use and is suitable for beginners as well as experienced climbers and competitive athletes.

How much chalk should I use?

As a rule, a thin, even layer on your fingers and palms is sufficient. More chalk does not automatically mean more grip. Too much chalk can create unnecessary dust and build up on the holds.

Can I combine loose chalk with liquid chalk?

Yes. Many climbers use liquid chalk as a base layer and loose chalk for re-chalking later. This is especially practical for longer sessions or routes.

What is the difference between loose chalk and a chalk ball?

Loose chalk sits freely in the chalk bag and can be dispensed very quickly and flexibly. With a chalk ball, the chalk is contained in a mesh fabric and is released in a more controlled manner, resulting in less loose powder.

What is the difference between loose chalk and liquid chalk?

Loose chalk can be quickly reapplied at any time and offers exceptional flexibility. Liquid chalk is applied as a liquid, dries on the skin, and is ideal as an even base layer with minimal dust.

How should loose chalk be stored?

Loose chalk should be stored as dry and sealed as possible. For larger packages, it is recommended to only fill a chalk bag or boulder bag with a portion and store the remaining supply in a dry place.

Can loose chalk go bad?

Dry climbing chalk does not spoil like food. As long as it is stored in a clean and dry place, it can be used for a very long time. Small clumps are often caused by moisture and can be broken up again after drying.

Can you use loose chalk in every climbing gym?

Not necessarily. Some climbing gyms restrict loose chalk due to dust and prefer chalk balls or liquid chalk. If in doubt, check the rules of the gym in question.

Can I use loose chalk on the rock?

Generally yes, provided it is allowed at the crag. Chalk should be used sparingly on the rock. Obvious chalk marks and tick marks should be removed after the session.
